Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Is a 1985 literary historical cross-genre novel ,originally published in German by  the german writer Patrick Süskind.

In the 18th century in the rue aux Fers where a stench reigned,  Jean-Baptiste Grenouille was born on July 17, 1738. He was the fifth child of a 25 years old woman that worked in a fish stall. The crowd noticed that she was going to leave him on the floor to perish. So, she was arrested and a
few weeks later decapitated.
No wet nurse wanted to have him, they thought he was damned because he didn’t smell. He was taken to Madame Gaillard she had a kind of orphanage in Faubourg Saint-Antoine. He ate watery soups, thinned milk, rottened vegetable and spoiled meat. He survived the measles, dysentery, cholera and a fall into a well that left him with a limp. This boy wasn’t talking or smiling or even looking at the people.  He wasn’t tall or corpulent but he was ugly. He wasn’t aggressive, nor clumsy. When he was 4, he said his first word “fishes”. He only used nouns that called his attention for the odor. Verbs, adjectives and prepositions were harder or nonsense.
When he was 6, all the smells of people and objects were known by him. He could even know when it would rain o who was near. He used to combine the scents to create a new perfume.  At the age of 8, he was sold to monsieur Grimal to work as a tanner. After some time, he contracted anthrax, a fatal disease. Besides all the predictions, he survived and he become very valuable for Grimal.

On september 1st, 1753 it was the anniversary of the king’s coronation, the city of Paris at the Pont-Royal.
